It was a cloudy Autumn day when I set off for the North Shore of Lake Superior. I was a little dismayed to see gray skies above. After taking in the landscapes of the parks that dot the highway, I noticed that the skies had given way. I jumped in my car and hurried back to Split Rock to see if I still had light left. I was so lucky to have made it in time to see the sun to drop behind the rocks behind me, showering Split Rock Lighthouse in the most beautiful, glowing light.
I loved this view of the Gold Medal Flour sign from Mill City park area. The textures of the brick on this landmark always made me happy when I printed it! Just one of the many stand out structures in downtown Minneapolis!
Here's a blog post about 'where I'm at' in my photographic journey. Fall is my favorite time of year, and I cannot wait for it's arrival to strike out to the North. I consider much of my nature photography to be meditative. I’ll find a spot that gives me a calming energy. A cool breeze or a subtle water spray that fills the air. The constant thunder of falling water that you can feel through the stone. The sound of rushing water forever pounding on the riverbed. I’ll study all things big or small that surround me. Take it all in. Imprint the moment and the feeling into my memory. Then, I let Nature tell me when.
The Charlotte Partridge Ordway Japanese Garden at the Como Zoo is one of my favorite places in the Twin Cities. This secluded garden appears harmoniously within the surrounding landscape as you approach the winding path to the water. The tree lined grove that embraces the area soothing the sounds of the park and city beyond. I go there to listen to the gentle falling water, the leaves rustling in the breeze, and the birds in the skies. It recharges me, and grants me a moment of true serenity that only Nature can provide.
Another Minnesota State Fair season is over! Sad to see it go, but like the phoenix, it will rise again next year to flatten our wallets and push the waistline to the limit! It was a great year of wonderful weather as well as great friends and moments for me! Thank you, Great Minnesota Get-Together! See you soon! Finally got a decent shot of Sweet Martha's this year--It will be on the site soon!
It was amazing to see that I received an award from the Friends of Hopkins Center of the Arts at the Minnesota State Fair Fine Art Exhibition. It's an absolute honor, and one that I owe to the wonderful elders of the Minnesota Hmong community--especially my beautiful subject, Sao Lou Vue. I grew up marveling at the incredible art at this yearly exhibition, and to be considered worthy of display there is an absolute dream come true. Man, that Minnesota music scene was something else in the early 80's. I was just a bit too young to appreciate it at the time. The Replacements' star on First Avenue couldn't have been in a more perfect spot--right by the back door. There shows were legendary for their chaos, but they left an indelible mark on the early punk/alternative scene. More black and white prints from MSP are being worked on as we speak, so stay tuned!
When I was young, I used to borrow National Geographic from the library and I would sit on my bed before I slept and marvel at the incredible photography. I dreamt of traveling the world and seeing this sacred locale in person. Amazingly enough, I was right here and I almost stepped right on past it. With one split second decision, we had realized my childhood dream by a total twist of fate. The wash of emotion I felt is something I will remember and treasure for the remainder of my days. I’m incredibly excited to say that one of my portraits from my ‘Of Distance and Time’ series was juried in for the Minnesota State Fair Fine Art Exhibition! I’m honored to be selected! Last year, there were almost 4000 entries across multiple categories, and 350 were selected. The fair’s attendance over the 12 days last year was almost 2 million people. I’m hoping to get some exposure out of it! Here is the entry, printed and framed by me. Entitled: Sao Lou Vue - May 28th, 2024 Media: Giclee fine art photographic print on Epson Cold Press Bright
I try to make a yearly photography trip to Minnesota’s North Shore of Lake Superior. I’ve always found it to be so inspiring, and it calls to my soul. There are so many opportunities to photograph moving water, which I am especially attracted to. The air is fresh and cool in the evenings, and beautiful sunsets and sunrises are commonplace. When the water runs high after winter’s grasp loosens, these tight channels heave and churn, making for some rugged photographic opportunities. Cascade River State Park is one of my all time favorites!

I'm hoping to plan an excursion to the North Shore soon! I can't wait to feel the Lake Superior spray again. It's such a special place to reconnect with Nature, as well as yourself. Hopefully, more meditative images will be on the way!
It’s Art-A-Whirl Weekend—May 16th to 18th! I’ll have my prints at the Northrup King Building, at Worker B in studio #260! Come and see us—it’s always fun to support your local artists at their studios!
I'm thrilled to say that our portrait exhibition, Of Distance and Time, has been getting good reviews so far! We are in the process of scheduling more viewings of the exhibition around the Twin Cities throughout the year, and working with school districts to create curriculum for their students--as well as celebrating these amazing elders and their stories. If you would like to see more of my portrait work, please visit the grant website, ofdistanceandtime.com . More information to come!
Over the last few weeks, I had the opportunity to publicly display my portrait photography exhibition. ‘Of Distance and Time’ celebrates the wisdom, strength, and experiences of Hmong elder women of Minnesota through portraiture. The goal of our project was to create empowering, legacy images of these elders to celebrate their lives and preserve their recollections of their journey as refugees for the benefit of families and students in the local Hmong community, as well as for all Minnesotans—and beyond. https://ofdistanceandtime.com/
