There was an ethereal silence that surrounded the city in the clouds. There was a dampness that hung in the air, muting sound in all directions, giving us all a sense of blanketed tranquility. The cloud cover drifting by gave us a glimpse of the sharp and craggy faces of the Mountain Gods, encircling and protecting the sacred cradle of Machu Picchu.
